The Sweetwater Junior High School project involved site modification, the addition of 4,386 square feet of new space, and the renovation of 40,595 square feet of existing space. In addition, new electrical and HVAC systems were provided. The original building was built in the 1950s, with other additions having been made in 1960, 1967, and 1972. The 7-8 grade facility houses approximately 270 students.

Construction materials used include masonry bearing and stud bearing walls. Interior walls are CMU or wood stud, and exterior walls are CMU with brick veneer or structural metal stud. The pitched roof is constructed of wood trusses with fiberglass shingles.

The Tennessee School Boards Association presented the school with the School of the Year Award in 1999.
